"Two shoe prototypes were used for this study: FLEX and STIFF. Shoe upper, midsole foam (ethylene vinyl acetate foam), and midsole geometry (heel height: 34.7 mm, drop: 9 mm) were identical for the two prototypes.
For each prototype, a plate was embedded in the midsole. While plates’ geometry was identical for the two prototypes, their material and so their bending stiffness differed.
The FLEX condition was made from polyamide plate (bending stiffness: 10.4 N/mm). The STIFF condition was made from a fiber composite plate (bending stiffness: 17 N/mm).
Shoe mass was similar for FLEX and STIFF conditions to avoid any influence of this parameter on RE. Each pair was not used for more than
50 km over the experiment to ensure that shoe wear did not influence results."
